“Breaking In” Review

A new film titled “Breaking In” is a American thriller directed by James McTeigue along with Will Packer, James Lopez, Craig Perry, and Sheila Taylor.  Actress Gabrielle Union portraits Shaun Russell who plays a mother that will go through any obstacle to protect her kids.

In the movie, the first scene portrays the Russell’s grandfather who had just gotten hit by a pick-up truck while he was jogging.  The driver had then stepped out and on stomped his head. Him now being recently deceased makes Shaun take a weekend trip with be the kids to sell her old family home believing it will be just another weekend at her dad’s house, but everything is not as it seems.  The house seemed to be big and well-designed, however as more characters are introduced, including daughter Jasmine (played by Ajiona Alexus) and son Glover (played by Seth Ben Carr), it seems that there are more secrets that were about to unfold.

Behind closed doors there was a well-paid security alarm to protect the home along with security cameras, locked down windows, bright large lights outside, a security room in the basement.  As time passes, one question is still not answered. What was the father protecting himself from?  The kids expected nothing.  They just believed it was a cool house, then soon realized late in the night their nightmares will soon become real.  Russell walks out to go order some pizza when four men then break in and take the kids and attempt to take her also.  She then escapes and fights off the guy trying to take her. Russell runs towards the house for her children when she realized he had already got them first.

The leader of this crew of criminals was Eddie played by Bill Burke and members were Sam (Levi Meaden), Peter (Mark Furze), and Duncan (Levi Meaden).  Although these actors are supposed to be heartless criminals, the way they act just doesn’t scream “Hey I’m here and I will hurt you if I don’t get what I want.”   They just look and sound like a group of guys that got together and thought to themselves that it might be a good idea to go rob a house, however they didn’t really think it through.  My point is these actors were just very lazy with their performance.  At this point the one thing that actually made up for their performances was the background music that brought the movie’s only source of real suspense.

In my opinion, the way you see the trailer is the way you see it in the film.  In certain moments, the film will portray different characters to make them appear  more interesting than they actually are, however the main focus is just a mother going above and beyond to save her children.  Yet we still never learn the grandfather’s dark past that caused all of these events to occur in the first place.  There is simply to much major information that we need to be solved in this film that simply isn’t.  When you mix not enough information with lazy actors it just doesn’t end well.  Others may feel inspired by this movie and everyone has there different opinions. Breaking In was just a movie that I wasn’t interested in.
