Chile currently has one of the highest levels of economic inequality. Santiago, the capital and largest city, has been overrun by protests that were sparked by an increase in subway prices, however that is just the tip of the iceberg against the poor conditions of the economy. Now that inequality is threatening the country’s stability of public health care and education.

It all started in a subway; people were fed up about how much they were paying for subway fares. Citizens decided to run through the subway without paying to start the protest. This sparked something with the residents of Chile, and now they are rioting everywhere because of the unfair economic system.

Thousands of people attacked the capital by setting fiery barricades and clashed with the police. Police responded to demonstrators by spraying water cannons and firing rubber bullets and tear gas. Identical actions were repeated in towns and cities all along the South American country of 18 million people.Approximately 20,000 soldiers were patrolling the streets. Nearly 200 people have been injured, 5,000 have been arrested, and at least 18 people were killed.

Sebastián Piñera implemented a curfew time to try to minimize the amounts of riots that were happening, however that curfew was recently lifted due to the protest of over a million people. Chile is currently filled with rage and confusion due to the fact that their terrible economy is causing inequality, and the government is failing to fix it. With all these riots occurring, it is certainly bringing awareness to a country wide problem.
