Ukrainian Refugee Crisis
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 millions of Ukrainians have fled their homes to neighboring European nations, in search of safety. According to the United Nations, more than 11 Million Ukrainians have fled as refugees into neighboring countries. Most of these refugees are women and children, estimates say that nearly 75,000 Ukrainian children are displaced every day. These numbers are only Ukrainians that have fled the country, over 6.5 million Ukrainians have been displaced as a result of the invasion. Most of the refugees have fled to neighboring Poland. The Polish government has urged its citizens to open their arms to the Ukrainian refugees. Besides Poland, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Estonia and many others have taken in Ukrainian refugees. The international response to this crisis has been amazing. Millions of families have opened their homes to these refugees and international organizations like the United Nations and the Red Cross have given humanitarian aid to these refugees.
What Can You Do?
There are many charities and organizations dedicated to aiding the refugee crisis in the face of this unjustified invasion. Organizations such as UNICEF and the Red Cross are taking donations that will go to helping the Ukrainian refugees. Many more organizations are accepting donations towards helping the refugees, some even on campus. The Canyon High School chapter of Children of War Foundation (COWF) is aiding in the crisis and it is an easy and effective way to get involved. There are also various social media accounts that highlight ways you can help, such as the Instagram account: @ukraine.ua. Another Instagram account that has information on the war and how to help is, @unitednations, the official United Nations Instagram account. These organizations help the people of Ukraine by donating money to Ukraine or actually sending people to help, such as COWF sending a team of cardiac surgeons to L’viv. These are some simple yet meaningful ways to help the people of Ukraine.
