With school being back in session, it is important to keep in mind the goals that you have in place for yourself throughout high school and an idea of an outcome in your head. For my fellow seniors, I know that can seem like a big challenge and it is something that lots of people struggle with. Senioritis, as it is known to many, is a common phenomenon where students may tend to feel unmotivated or believe that their academic performance/presence doesn’t matter. While senioritis can feel different for everybody, here are a few tips to keep in mind as we start the new school year.
One major component to tackling procrastination is to create a schedule and manage your time and all activities appropriately and proactively. Identify how heavy you think your workload is going to be early on in the year to ensure you know how and when to complete assignments, as well as be more on top of your deadlines and school agenda throughout the year. Senior year is meant to be a very fun and exciting period of life, and by doing this, you can make time for other extracurricular/personal activities and free time! You can do this by keeping a checklist, calendar, or planner, or finding any other sort of schedule that works for you.
Another tactic that can help with avoiding procrastination and being proactive with your schooling is to find a support system. This could look like a friend to help hold you accountable for your work or a classmate who you know you can work together with. Peers are a great and often overlooked source of support and help when you need it! Many of our peers feel the same way and it is great to have someone you can count on if you need help. Another great way to get support at school is via your teachers! Many teachers are more than willing to help you and taking the initiative to ask for help from a teacher will make it less intimidating to do so if you need to again! This is a great way to also strengthen your bond with your teachers this year, as well as a great source of support and help. You can ask year teachers during class if you have any questions or need guidance, and many teachers offer office hours as well. Make sure to take advantage of these opportunities if you need to!
Additionally, a great mindset to adopt is that of wanting to finish your high school career on a good note academically. So many of us have worked so hard throughout the last three years, and this is a great opportunity to continue doing so and not undermine our strong efforts. Our next journey, college, is approaching very soon, and colleges do care about GPA and courses. This is the perfect time to continue performing great academically, and by doing this you are ensuring that you are ready for that next step. Let’s finish this year auspiciously!
