Recently, on September 11th, the 2024 MTV Video and Music Awards aired and it has gained a lot of attention online. From Megan Thee Stallion’s recreation of Brittany Spear’s iconic 2001 VMA performance to Chappell Roan’s extravagant Joan of Arc costume, there was truly something for fans alike.
Taylor Swift made history as she now holds the title of being the most-awarded VMA winner after her seven wins of the night. Her nominated song, “Fortnight”, featuring Post Malone, took home most of the wins in the categories of Video of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Video, Song of the Summer, Best Editing, and Best Direction. Swift now has 30 wins total, along with Beyoncé, who is tied with the same amount of wins.
As with some of the other wins, Chappell Roan won Best New Artist, “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter was named Song of the Year, and “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” by Ariana Grande received Best Cinematography. The biggest award of the night, the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, was presented to Katy Perry, which she accepted by mentioning, “There are so many things that have to align to have a long and successful career as an artist. There are no decade-long accidents.” Perry then closed off by giving her thanks to her fans, Capitol Records, and her family.
The red carpet fashion created a buzz as many were stunned by the attention to detail this year. In style with her usual “camp” looks, Chappell Roan arrived in a fully gothic and medieval robe while wielding a sword. Some, like Sabrina Carpenter, went for a more classy approach as seen with her in a white gown and Marilyn Monroe-inspired makeup and hair to top the look. I interviewed a student, Rana Noqul, about her opinion on the VMA outfits. This is what she had to say about one of her favorites, Chappell Roan: “I absolutely loved Chapell Roan’s outfit. I think everything she does and wears is always iconic and the VMAs further proved this.”
This year’s iconic moments have left everyone excited for what next year’s looks are and what the musical performances have to offer.
