As someone whose life revolves around music, award season is one of my favorite times of the year. With the anticipation of the Grammys on Sunday, February 2nd, I’ve been taking this year’s nominees into account and mulling over the possible winners of each category.
The “Big Four,” and most important Grammys are Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Last year, Taylor Swift broke the artist’s record with the most Album of the Year awards with her album Midnights. This year, she is a nominee for her album The Tortured Poets Department. She is up against André 3000 with New Blue Sun, Beyoncé with Cowboy Carter, Sabrina Carpenter with Short n’ Sweet, Charli xcx with Brat, Jacob Collier for Djesse Vol. 4, Billie Eilish with Hit Me Hard and Soft, and finally Chappell Roan with The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. Arguably the most important award of the show is Album of the Year. A topic that has caused great controversy over the past few years is that Beyoncé has not once won the award in her almost three-decade career. She is once again nominated for the category, though, but as she is neck to neck with other great albums that have had an undeniable impact on music in 2024, it is uncertain that she will finally be taking home that award.
In my opinion, the most notable artists of this year’s Grammys are Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter. They are the only artists that are nominated in all the big four categories, including Best New Artist; it is astonishing to be considered a new artist and simultaneously have nominations in every single other important category, as well as other less important ones as well. Although they have both been in the music industry for years, they have made their big break just this year, causing huge commotion with their albums. For example, this summer Chappell Roan drew the largest crowd at Lollapalooza, and Carpenter stole the summer with her song Espresso. They are nominated for Best New Artist alongside Benson Boone, Doechii, Khruagbin, Raye, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims. Although there are many other nominees, the win seems to be a tight race between Roan and Carpenter.
Including the performances from many talented musical artists and other awards that shine a spotlight on other musicians who are not as well known, the 67th Grammy Awards are sure to be great, and I cannot wait to see how they unfold!
