St Patrick’s Day is a celebration of Irish culture. It is celebrated in countries with people of Irish descent. Patrick’s Day is the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. This holiday evolved into a celebration of Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, drinking and a lot of green all over the world.

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place not in Ireland, but in America. The first ever Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17, 1601 in a Spanish colony in what is now St. Augustine, Florida, and the first actual St. Patrick’s Day parade also took place in America, in 1737. In Ireland, Patrick’s Day was a day of religious traditions in a feast, but Irish Catholics in America throw huge parties on the 17th March to celebrate their heritage and show pride in who they are.

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City was held in 1762, fourteen years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence and was organized by Irish troops serving in British colonies. Today the world’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration is the annual parade in New York City, where more than two million spectators line the parade route. A largely virtual St. Patrick’s Day was planned for New York City on Wednesday, one year after the annual parade celebrating Irish culture became one of the city’s first coronavirus casualties. Although the usual huge parade with floats and marching bands has been canceled, a few dozen people, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, marched in the Kips Bay area early Wednesday to keep the tradition going on. At 8:30 a.m. there was a live broadcast of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
