Does Thanksgiving get Overlooked?

With the month of November just starting, people are already excited about Christmas, even though it’s over a month away. The second the clock strikes midnight on October 31st, Halloween is out and the Christmas season is in. But Thanksgiving is overlooked and it’s almost as if the holiday has been forgotten.

Some people might not believe that Thanksgiving gets overlooked but with that being said, according to dbknews, the article says, “Look at this university’s calendar: two days off to spend with family, and then it’s back to school the very next Monday.” If Thanksgiving was an important holiday as much as Christmas, students would be getting at least a week off to spend time with their families. Because of this, some people might wonder, why doesn’t Thanksgiving get as much recognition or why doesn’t it get talked about much? Dbknews states, “Religious holidays have traditionally been the major ones and dictate much of the vacation calendar. The nation’s historical relationship with Christianity has made Christmas and Easter our staple celebrations even if they’re completely secular for many people.” Another reason that the article explains is that Thanksgiving is not commercialized. “You can buy paper turkey decorations and pilgrim hats but much of the merchandise is for the season in general — leaves, pumpkins and things that blur into Halloween.”

But why shouldn’t Thanksgiving be overlooked? The holiday has lots to offer such as different foods, traditions, and events. Some of the Thanksgiving dishes and recipes are usually associated with Thanksgiving so they don’t get their time to shine until then. Some of those dishes are yams, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, and more. There are also traditions such as sharing to others what you’re thankful for and breaking the wishbone for some good luck.

Lastly, one of the biggest events is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade that happens around Thanksgiving day. This event debuted in 1924 and has been continuing ever since. The parade includes balloon characters and musicians performing at the event.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that has lots to offer as much as Christmas or Halloween. They may be bigger and celebrated more, but that doesn’t mean Thanksgiving should be forgotten and it should be also treated as a major holiday as well.
