Rosa Parks Day is a holiday in honor of well-known civil rights activist, Rosa Parks. In California, the day is celebrated on her birthday: February 4th. It was first celebrated in 2000. Here is a glance at her life:

Rosa Parks lived with her mother and grandparents. At 16, she dropped out of school to take care of her ill grandmother, but she was able to get her high school degree at 19. One day when she was on a bus, she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. During this time, Black people were supposed to sit in the back of the bus. She was arrested for violating laws of segregation, which soon led to civil rights activists arranging bus boycotts. With the help of Martin Luther King Jr., the boycott was successful and lasted for 381 days. As a result, the Supreme Court ended up banning segregation on public transportation.

Later on, throughout her life, she was involved in civil rights movements and helped with women’s rights. She worked with Congressman John Conyers when she moved to Detroit, Michigan. Because Parks never stopped fighting for equal rights and made a huge difference in the world, she became known as the “mother of the civil rights movement.”

Rosa Parks died Oct. 24, 2005 at the age of 92, but she will always be remembered as a woman who changed the nation. There is no doubt that Parks continues to influence the world we live in today, and for that reason, this day should always be celebrated.
