Transferring from VP to Canyon

When my mom told me she wanted me to transfer to Canyon because she felt it would be a better fit for me, I was totally shocked. I didn’t want to go at all. I would be leaving all my friends, my classes, and cheerleading. Also, going to my rival school just didn’t seem right to me. I was so nervous to go to Canyon. I thought I wasn’t going to make friends, and that’s what worried me the most. Personally, I hate being alone, so my first day was extremely hard. However, I noticed something right away at Canyon: the students were exceptionally welcoming and nice. At first, I planned on not doing cheer at Canyon as I had done at Villa Park, but after some encouragement, I tried out and made the team. This really excited me because being a part of a team allows you to make a great connection with people.

One thing I definitely had to get used to about Canyon was the block schedule. I was so used to going to every period for a shorter amount of time everyday at Villa Park. Although I do like block schedule for homework, as it gives me an extra day, the classes are so long and I haven’t quite adjusted to that yet. Another plus about my schedule is that since I take a zero period, I don’t have a sixth period, so every other day I get out after fourth period. This was the only major difference for me, so I feel I’m adjusting to Canyon pretty nicely. I don’t know the campus all too well yet, but I know where all my classes are, so I’m fine for now.

Jayla Jerro is now part of the Smoke Signals staff at Canyon.

At first, I was really dreading going to Canyon, and I kept saying I was going to hate it, but it turns out I waswrong. Canyon is actually a great school and I feel that I’m really going to enjoy my next three years here. Fitting in wasn’t even a problem for me, and that’s what I worried about the most. Of course I miss my friends from Villa Park and my cheer sisters, however I can’t wait to make new friends at Canyon and create bonds with the girls on cheer. My experience at Canyon has been great and I look forward to the memories I will make here.
