Writer’s Block

Writer’s Block is a club at Canyon High School, established several years ago by students that couldn’t find any similar ones to join. It’s a student run organization of writers that come together throughout the school year to share their original pieces and ideas. It’s a place that allows students to let out their thoughts and frustrations by spilling them onto paper, giving them a safe outlet. It helps people at the school find peers with similar interests and forms long-lasting friendships throughout the years they spend at Canyon.

It accepts all levels of skill — whether you have three published novels or have never written before, you’re welcome to join. Participation in writing assignments is not obligatory, but it is recommended, as volunteers are allowed to read their work aloud and share it with others.

Writer’s Block covers several different activities over the course of all the meetings. Members will write in different genres, branching out into ones that are both new and familiar; they’ll undergo technique workshops, hold brainstorming sessions, have the option to share stories and critiques, have opportunities to fill in volunteer hours, participate in contests, take part in story building activities, play engaging games, and overall have fun with each other.

The board for 2020-2021 includes Abigail Stephens as president, Siraj Bajwa as vice president, Eliza Rahmikhudoeva as secretary, Georgia Axiotis as publicity, and Isabel Wilson as treasurer. All of the current board members are juniors, so new members will be able to run for any position they’d like to in two years, as the club will need an entirely new board.

Writer’s Block can be contacted on their Instagram @chswritersblock for any further information. If you’re interested in signing up for the club, text the message 3fe268 to the number 81010 to join the Remind. Your membership is not permanent or binding; if at any point you would like to leave, you are free to do so. Stop by for the first meeting and see if you’re interested!
