The Fashion Icons of the Inauguration .. in order

On Wednesday, January 20, 2021, Joe Biden was sworn in as president of the United States. He and many others gave speeches about the travesty of the effect of racial violence, the global pandemic, climate change and domestic extremism America has experienced through 2020. He spoke with hope and optimism for the future of this country. Whilst there were important speeches and plans being aired, there was another important at play: the outfits of the attendees. The following ratings are only based on my opinions on fashion and have nothing to do with political beliefs. This is entirely for fun and should not be taken seriously.

Starting with the highest scoring attendee: Bernie Sanders. His outfit, especially the mittens, and his demeanor is serving everyone a “this could have been in an email” vibes. I love the mitten’s pattern and he looks comfortable in his jacket and pants. I love the fit of the pants as they hit him right at his ankles. Overall, I gave him a score of 11/10.

Next, getting a score of 10/10, is Michelle Obama. I love this outfit! This color is everything with her skin tone. She has a warm skin tone so the warm colors just look good on her. In this outfit she looks regal and her skin is glowing. A special round of applause for the pants. The wide leg paired with the belt and tucked in shirt gives her an hourglass figure. I appreciated that she unbuttoned her coat as well. In conclusion, this outfit looks stunning on her.

With a score of 9/10, Jill Biden absolutely rocks this color. The blue brings out her eyes and texture photographs well. She looks classy and professional. She is gracing everyone with her presence.

After Jill Biden, Finnegan Biden comes in with an 8/10. I am a die-hard fan of her tan leather gloves. She looks so elegant and mature. I think the gloss of the heels and long pants makes her look taller, and with the structure of the coat, she has a gorgeous figure that is emphasized perfectly. The color pairs perfectly with her skin tone.

Amanda Gordon’s yellow suit reflects a beautiful glow back onto her face. I love the gold accessories in her hair and the rings on her fingers. However, I am not a fan of the red hand band. Regardless, her hair looks ethereal and she definitely earned the rating of a 7/10.

Hilary Clinton’s popping purple moment earned 6/10. Just a quick question: why are Hilary and Kamala Harris matching? Did they not get the memo? They could have chosen different shades at least. Kamala should have gone home and chose a different color, because Hilary looked better in this. I love the ruffles. The pants fit nicely and her eyes really pop with this outfit. In conclusion, this outfit wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t good either.

Up next, Nathalie Biden scored a 5/10. The shade of pink looks nice and she is a beautiful girl but the shape of the coat was weird. It looked stiff and made her look like she was drowning in fabric. The tie at the top was bulky and off- putting. Her hair was just kind of there. It wasn’t done special and in total this look was kind of meh. It didn’t look well thought out, hence the 5/10.

Kamala Harris’ outfit was a disappointment. Hilary wore the color of purple better and Kamala’s outfit looked plain for such an important person. The cool toned purple did not match Kamala’s warm colored skin tone. Also the outfit gave her an unflattering figure. The coat was too long, because of that her legs look disproportionate to the rest of her body. Unfortunately, all of the fashion mistakes gave her a score of 4/10

Kamala’s niece, Meena Harris, followed in her aunt’s footsteps of a hapless outfit. I really hate that coat and the entire outfit would look so much better without it. The ruffles are bizarre. The color was a few shades off for her skin tone and would have looked better if it had more warmth to it. I rate this outfit a 3/10.

Next we have Laura Bush who scored a 2/10. I am in love with Laura’s coat. The gray neckline draws the eye down which makes her look taller and gives her an hourglass figure. I love the color of the coat on her, it matches shades and tones with her skin and it is for sure her color to wear. However everything else about her outfit is upsetting. The dress would have been better if it was the same color as the coat; the bag she was carrying looks like she bought it at Marshalls or Target. Her shoes were not it. She looked completely out of place in a completely monochromatic event.

Joe Biden please fire your stylist. How is the president of the United States “best” attire navy blue pants and a black blazer? How? There is so much potential with patterns and experimentation in different structures and fits of suits that he could have worn. It was pretty boring compared to the ladies of the event. However I will say that his eyes were drawn out with the navy blue pants. Because of all the wasted potential to be the “best dressed” at the event, I give Joe a 1/10.

Lady Gaga holds her dress as she walks down the stairs.

There is absolutely nothing I liked about Lady Gaga’s dress. The golden bird on her dress reminds of the Hunger Games mocking jay pin. The whole point of the event was to be monochromatic so why was she not? I hated the way her skirt puffed out, it felt like an afterthought based on the unusual height it puffed out during. The black top was confusing because it could have easily been the same pink as her dress. Another question: what was that headband? Who thought that a massive golden bird, cheetah print silk headband, bright pink puffy skirt and fitted black top was going to work well together? I really disagree with everything in this outfit. Even the pink is the wrong shade for her skin tone. Based on all of that, I gave her a 0/10.

Overall, for the men, I would recommend that the gentlemen match their ties to their partner’s dress and I would love to see some experimentation outside of black, gray and navy suits. For the women, I would recommend planning who is going to wear which color and match skin tones to the shade of the color. Despite all of my critiques, everyone looked beautiful and forever will be.
