Breaking Records For Charity On Twitch.TV

Twitch has become a platform many have flocked to for entertainment as the coronavirus pandemic continues to affect huge portions of the world. Streamers on the platform play all kinds of games but one of the most popular at the moment is Minecraft— and with popular games, comes popular creators.

This includes content creators such as DreamWasTaken: a faceless content creator who, in the early summer of 2020, started a survival multiplayer world (SMP) with his close friends. As the year went on, he added new players. One of the players he added in late November of 2020, was creator Ranboo (also known as RanbooLive)— who at the time was a smaller, but very entertaining creator straight off of TikTok and YouTube. He started with a little under 10k YouTube subscribers, and less than 4k followers on Twitch. As he gained popularity through this SMP, his social media presence skyrocketed, and so did his following.

On February 20, 2021, Ranboo— who had been streaming for less than 6 months in total— became the most subscribed creator on Twitch, the youngest person to ever hold the title; the first Minecraft streamer to be in the first place spot; the third ever streamer to have 100k subscriptions on Twitch; and the (unofficial) world record holder for the fastest gain of subscribers on Twitch and for the highest percent hype train.

On February 20th, Ranboo began a stream at 1PM EST that was meant to be a charity project. Every dollar he received in subscriptions during the stream would be going to the Trevor Project, an LGBTQ+ suicide prevention network for LGBTQ youth 25 years old and younger. In only the first half an hour of streaming, Ranboo overtook streamer TryMacs for the number one most subscribed user on Twitch at the time. In less than 2 hours, he gained over 20k subscriptions. As the stream went on, his subscriber count ultimately went up by 43k subscribers—which beat the previous record for a 42-hour stream done in 2018, which ended with 29k overall new subscribers.

In total, Ranboo raised over $100k dollars in total for the Trevor Project, and in his stream, explained that he, as a minor, was limited to a monthly donation by his bank. “See, since I’m a minor, I can’t give all of it all at once. So I set up a monthly donation that I never plan to stop. I mean— I think I’ll have it going for five—five to ten years, probably,” he explained.

Further on in the stream, a somber moment arose when he paused and explained why he specifically chose the Trevor Project. He gave a very personal story about his cousin, who had been questioning her sexual identity. “She had been questioning, and uh, she—she couldn’t receive the help she needed— and she um— she passed. And I know that if she—if she had access to something like the Trevor Project, she could’ve gotten the help she needed,” he said. Even later on, he addressed his chat, self-proclaimed to be primarily made up of LGBTQ+ youth—and told them about the Trevor Project and how he encouraged them to use it if they ever needed it, and how their money during the stream will be going directly to saving people’s lives.

A monumental charity stream done by someone still attending high school, and still maintaining a 4.0 GPA, was done after an entire 12 hours. In that time, Ranboo was able to break records previously held by streamers who had been using the platform for years before him, and who streamed games seen by the gaming community as much more serious than Minecraft. Fans of Ranboo on Twitter had him trending worldwide, and he took up over 6 hashtag spots globally for about 1 hour at 3PM PST.

The records he broke during the stream for Twitch’s platform included: Youngest streamer in the number one spot; One of three streamers to ever hit 100k subscribers on the platform; the record for most subscribers during a single stream, gaining 43k (and beating the previous 29k record); and the ‘hype-train’ record with a final total of a 59k% hype-train.
